Herbal medicines have been used as an antidiabetic, renoprotective and antioxidant for a long time in folk system. Hence in the present study, we evaluated the renoprotective effect of two herbal formulations in subjects with type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Total of 100 subjects those who have T2DM were randomly selected from the Jiwaji Health Centre, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. The subjects were divided in to two groups (50 each). Two herbal formulations (Phyllanthus emblica, Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellirica, Gymnemma sylvestre, Curcuma longa, Pterocarpus marsupium, Cassia fistula, Picrorhiza kurroa and Swertia chirata) were administered for the period of 90 days. Fasting and PP blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, kidney markers (blood - urea, uric acid, creatinine and urine - sugar, protein, ketonebodies) and oxidative stress markers (SOD, catalase, GSH, TBARS) were monitored in the study subjects. ANOVA and paired t-test was made the compare the significance. Administration of herbal regiments regularly for 90 days resulted in significant reductions of blood glucose (P < 0.001) and glycosylated hemoglobin levels (P < 0.001) in all regiments. Also, kidney function markers (urea levels reduced 14-16%, uric acid levels reduced 7.0-12.0% and creatinine levels reduced 15-18%) and antioxidant markers were improved significantly (P < 0.05). The overall study showed the significant improvement in kidney functions, glycemic control as well as antioxidant markers. The observed renoprotective activity may be due to anti-oxidant property of the herbal medicines.
