Many studies have reported that both lower glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and greater albuminuria are independently related to the rates of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), cardiovascular events, and mortality. Additionally, more than 40% of subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) develop diabetic kidney disease (DKD), which has become the leading cause of ESRD. It is well known that not only hyperglycemia but also dyslipidemia can cause the onset and progression of DKD. However, there is limited information regarding the effects of dyslipidemia control on chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially in DKD with hypertriglyceridemia. This review describes the results of recent observational studies supporting the concept that dyslipidemia is responsible for kidney damage onset, and focuses on hypertriglyceridemia could play a relevant role in inducing onset and progression of DKD. Additionally, the we discuss the effect of lowering hypertriglyceridemia on DKD with aspect of albuminuria and eGFR, and future perspective studies.
