Objectives: Adequate blood pressure (BP) control is considered one of main treatment strategies in dialysis patients. However, the goal and ideal range of BP have not been defined exactly among dialysis patients. We aimed to investigate proper management for BP control associated with better survival in dialysis patients.
Methods: Based on the data of health screening results from 2002 to 2008 in the database of the Korean National Health Insurance System (NHIS), we examined the association of BP control with all-cause mortality among hemodialysis (HD, dialysis code V001) and peritoneal dialysis (PD, V003) patients using Cox-regression analysis.
Results: A total of 46,445 patients (39,811 HD and 6,634 PD patients) were enrolled for the analysis. In the HD group, the risk of mortality increased in proportion to the degree of BP when systolic BPs were above 140mmHg compared to 120-140mmHg, the reference group. In comparison, the mortality risk increased when systolic BPs were below 120mmHg compared to 120-140mmHg in the PD group, and systolic BPs were not significantly associated with higher mortality above 140 mmHg except higher than 180mmHg in PD group.
Conclusions: This study may offer some insight with respect to BP management in Korean dialysis patients.
