Objectives: Significant concern and discussion about the relationship between hyperuricemia and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) remained, leaving a doubt as to whether treating hyperuricemia for the prevention and slowing down CKD progression is beneficial. This study aims to determine the prevalence of CKD and the associated predisposing factors for its development among Filipino patients with hyperuricemia.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that includes hyperuricemic patients attending the social service out-patient department of St. Luke’s Medical Center Quezon City. The prevalence rate of CKD, its relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and predisposing factors were determined.
Results: CKD was found in 167 of 231 hyperuricemic patients, for a prevalence rate of 72.29%. Multivariate regression analysis of factors associated with CKD in hyperuricemic patients showed that older age group >60 years old remained a significant risk factor for CKD with 4.8 times greater risk compared to the younger age groups(p=0.0182). Likewise, presence of hypertension remained a significant risk factor for CKD (OR 2, 95% CI 1.0-5.0, p=0.0377). Higher SUA level >10 mg/dl appeared to be a significant risk factor for CKD than lower SUA levels (OR 5.9, 95% CI 1.7 to 20.6, p=0.0053).
Conclusions: Elderly, hypertension and higher SUA levels > 10 mg/dl are significant risk factors for CKD in hyperuricemic patients.
