Inflammageing, or the intermediate inflammatory phenotype, is a persistent low-level inflammatory burden that accompanies age-related dysregulation of the immune system with normative ageing and within thediseasome of ageing. A healthy diet containing a balanced number of macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals, adequate in calories and rich in poly(phenols), has an important role in mitigating the effects of inflammageing and extending health span through modulating of nuclear transcription factors, such as nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-kB), the inflammasome and the gut microbiota among other targets. This presentation will highlight the role of bioactive compounds in foods (e.g., resveratrol, fisetin, luteolin, rutin, epigallocatechin gallate, curcumin, pirfenidone, myricetin, apigenin, catechin, and quercetin) for patients with CKD. As food is the single strongest lever to optimize human health and environmental sustainability “the power is your plate”.
