Despite a steadily decreasing population of individuals treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) in South Korea, PD is still an effective modality for end-stage kidney disease. Contrary to traditional PD prescriptions that focused on “adequacy” of dialysis, recent recommendations on prescribing high-quality PD emphasize incorporation of multiple measures rather than the single value of Kt/Vurea. These measures highlight the need for a person-centered approach, which include shared decision-making between the patient and the care team and assessment of health-related quality of life, burden of uremic symptoms, presence of residual kidney function, volume status, and biochemical measures including serum potassium and bicarbonate levels. This lecture will introduce practical examples to understand how PD prescriptions can be tailored to the patient priorities and goals of care while taking a broader view of the various issues faced by that individual. Hopefully, this lecture can help young nephrologists encourage to serve a more holistic and person-centered approach for prescribing high-quality PD.
