This study, led by the Korean Society of Nephrology Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee, aims to enhance disaster preparedness and response for dialysis facilities. Recognizing the heightened vulnerability of hemodialysis patients during disasters due to their reliance on regular specialized care, our committee is addressing the pressing need for increased awareness of disaster vulnerability in dialysis units. The research encompasses a comprehensive survey on disaster preparedness and awareness among medical staff in Korean hemodialysis units and the formulation of emergency dietary plans for patients, particularly during times when dialysis treatment is inaccessible. The study employs a rigorous methodology, involving the administration of an awareness survey validated by experts and the development of disaster preparedness (DP) assessment scales for dialysis facilities, with consensus obtained from developers in Japan. These scales, endorsed by specialists from the Japanese Association of Dialysis Physicians, are categorized into four key domains; patient, administration, network, and safety. The findings could be informing the creation of national guidelines and training modules for disaster response in dialysis units, ensuring the uninterrupted provision of dialysis services and strengthening the healthcare system's capacity to effectively manage dialysis patients during disasters.
