Nearly 450,000 patients are being treated with peritoneal dialysis worldwide. While infectious complications remain the most common complication of peritoneal dialysis, a significant proportion of patients can develop non-infectious complications with the therapy. They include a wide range of issues that arise from increase in intraperitoneal pressure with dialysate (such as hernia and leaks), movement of intraperitoneal dialysate to other body cavities (such as from a patent processus vaginalis or hydrothorax), presence of blood or chyle or air in the peritoneum, systemic effects of dialysate (such as hypokalemia or metabolic abnormalities) and long-term damage such as encapsulating peritoneal dialysis. With over 40 years of experience with long-term PD, there is a large body of experience in managing these complications while maintaining patients on PD without needing to transfer patients to hemodialysis
