Clinicians are increasingly utilizing ultrasound throughout nephrology including in the diagnosis and assessment of acute and chronic renal failure, urinary obstruction, cystic disease, pain management, hematuria, transplantation, kidney biopsy, vascular access (temporary and permanent), and fluid status assessment. The evolution and innovation in ultrasound technology, marked by miniaturization, portability, and cost-effectiveness, is swiftly transforming it into a clinician-performed point-of-care procedure. Point-of-care ultrasound refers to examinations conducted by clinicians in tandem with patient care, spanning from comprehensive studies to focused limited ones aimed at addressing specific clinical inquiries. Its broad applicability in clinical nephrology promises significant advantages, streamlining patient care, minimizing fragmentation and improving patient and physician convenience. This talk will focus on clinical case scenarios that highlight the utility of point-of-care sonography in the practice of nephrology.
