Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in the Philippines face significant challenges that impact their overall well-being and quality of life. This study conducted a phenomenological research on the lived experiences of patients with CKD in a tertiary hospital in Laguna, Philippines. One-on-one interviews and focus group discussions were conducted among 8 participants from March to June 2024. One of the primary issues is the early detection and diagnosis of the disease. CKD often remains undiagnosed in its initial stages due to the absence of noticeable symptoms, leading to more severe complications when it is finally detected. Access to healthcare is another major concern, as many patients find it challenging to receive proper medical care and regular check-ups, which are essential for managing the condition effectively. The high cost of treatments, such as dialysis, further exacerbates the situation, making it difficult for patients to afford the necessary care. Additionally, patients are required to make substantial lifestyle changes, including dietary adjustments and medication adherence, which can be tough to maintain over time. Public awareness of CKD and its associated risk factors is generally low, contributing to late diagnosis and treatment. Many CKD patients also suffer from comorbid conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which complicate their treatment and management. The financial burden of CKD treatment poses significant socio-economic challenges for patients and their families, often leading to financial strain and hardship. Moreover, the emotional and psychological effects of living with CKD can be profound, impacting patients' mental health and quality of life. Addressing these issues requires a multi-faceted approach, involving healthcare providers, policymakers, and the community to ensure that patients receive the support and care they need to manage their condition effectively and improve their overall quality of life.
